Which is the Better Buy: Vinyl vs. DTF (direct to film)

Creating your Cute with a custom graphic tee? Looking into your options? After finding the right designer, the next step is choosing materials. Let’s dive into the differences between vinyl and dtf shirts to discover which is the better buy of these two popular methods.

Whether you're hitting up the oversized shirts trend, or personalizing a shirt for a birthday, understanding these materials can help you make an informed decision when having a custom shirt made. Get ready as I Spill the Tee on vinyl and dtf.

What is vinyl?

Vinyl is a material that comes in a variety of textures and colors to create custom images. It needs to be die cut by a machine, giving it a professional and polished look. Vinyl is great if you are looking for a simple image without a lot of detailed color. Something like a quote or emblem works well when using vinyl. If you are looking to add a bit of texture to your shirt, vinyl is the way to go. Textures can range from glitter to puffy or metallic. There is an almost endless array of textures to ensure your fit makes the statement you want. It also comes in handy for those of us looking for a quick turnaround time. Spillin' Tee Designs can usually whip up a custom image in a few business days. Once the design is made, it only needs to be cut and adhered with a professional grade heat press.

While vinyl is great when customizing in a pinch or making something simple it does have its drawbacks.

When creating multi-colored looks, vinyl can start to feel thick or heavy. This is why detailed images or items with many colors use other preferred methods of application. Another drawback is that vinyl can’t make vibrant detailed images. For instance, if you want to make funny shirts for a birthday party using pictures of the birthday kiddo, you’ll never achieve that look.

DTF (Direct to Film) Transfers:

Now, let's shift our focus to DTF transfers – the technology that brings your detailed designs to life. Unlike vinyl, DTF involves printing your chosen graphic onto a thin film, which is then seamlessly transferred to the fabric using a heat press. This technique is perfect for those who crave high-resolution, detailed prints on their custom shirts, especially oversized sweatshirts. If you're looking to create personalized phrases or custom shirts for any celebration with intricate details, DTF is the way to go.
